Tried that once. It's crap.

Fakedeck in it's current incarnation uses a separate armboard about 4"x8" in 20mm italian slate. If I hold it in the middle and tap it, it rings at about 400Hz. Not for very long, but definitely a ring.

Interesting, this. I'm a fairly convinced slate user, simply due to the fact that it sounds better to me than anything else I've tried, but the theories expounded as to why it works don't really add up. If slate acts as an energy sink, then why can I pick up a rectangle of the stuff, hold it gently ...
