Yep, always the advantages of choke input. Its worth remembering that any regulator is not a perfect solution, it will have a attenuation of signal on the input, and that attenuation will not be constant with frequency. It will also have a output impedance that governs how its output voltage varies...

Your problem Simon sounds very much like a computer on the edge of its abilities - how many apps does it load up on startup, and is it possible to stop a whole stack of them ? CCleaner is your friend here :) I'd be a bit surprised if that's the case, but maybe it is. I'll download CCleaner and see ...

Re: Recording Vinyl

Ah. Good theory, but I should probably have been clearer. The silence track is with the phono plugged into the laptop but no record, arm on its rest. And it's an old DD. This happens when the phono stage is connected directly to the laptop with no record playing, see the first screenshot. When I pla...

Andrew wrote:If you get the right bits up to (and over) 300B voltages for shunts, in theory same for series regs but I haven't tried these over about 250v yet.
IXY 10 thingees? What do you think of the sound of shunt regs - worth persevering with it seems?

Yep, that's exactly it. It would still benefit from a LC before the regulator, but I think as drawn it should work. Do you think there would be much benefit going choke input before the reg rather than cap input? Obviously choke loading needs a bigger mains tx (and saves a reservoir cap), but might...

You're having a giraffe right? Odd bits reminded me a little of The Flaming Lips - who (or what) is it?

Blimey that was quick. It uploaded over 4MB in less than a minute.

Hmmm. Doesn't make any difference whether the laptop is plugged into the mains or not, but there was a completely different waveform tonight - much more irregular, random almost. No idea why this might be. But I tried taking the signal from the output of the passive pre to the laptop (rather than di...

6EM7 spud with a 6EM7 reg sounds interesting :-).

Andrew, did you get the shunt reg fettled, and what sort of voltages have you got it working at?

That's very interesting Mike, I'll try running it from the battery tomorrow too.

I could try running it through the passive pre, but I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. I'll give it a whirl tomorrow if I get chance.

Hi Simon Yep I think the phono stages output will be on the high side I have a usb device I plug into the computer usb socket and I then plug the input of this device into the tape out on the amp so just try plugging the computer into the aux/tape out off the amp :) Hi Colin, I don't have any tape ...

Recording Vinyl

Bit of a long shot but I thought I'd ask :-) I've tried to record some vinyl on my laptop using Audacity so I can burn a CD to play in the car, but there's something not quite right. It's a long time since I last did something like this using my old desktop system and the soundcard software and it w...
