No Lowther driver has a voice coil that is suitable for proper midrange and above midrange reproduction. Everything above 0,18-0,20 grams (including the weight of the former material) is not suitable. If it weights more - you will always feel/hear that gravity problem to some extent, of course depe...

Opinion based on "air"?
A pretty bold statement. I would really like to hear the rationale behind it - if there is any at all. Perhaps it is simply based on a definition of midrange that is "unique to P.H."? If ones reference points are truly high enough, we realize that it is not the raw ingredients, rather how ...

63 for me
The earlier Quads are simply missing too much for me. I had 2 of them stacked per side with a Decca Kelly tweeter that was decent but under 300Hz they were still too weak. At the time (early '80s) I found no solution for the lower 4 octaves. I tried AR3 and 10pi woofers, JBL15" (don't remember ...

New Fane Colossus 12 MBN
Switched woofers. These are 3dB more sensitive and much better behaved above 1KHz than the Eminence. As far as the Sound goes, it is like a fresh ground cup of fine coffee compared to a Starbucks. Perhaps a bit less "absolute" flavour but everything fits harmoniously doesn't attack the ton...

Re: a neat amp is a sign of a sick mind.....
Actually, I meant "fuzzy" as a higher order organisation. When our "goals" are defined, the product takes a specific shape. We can wire aestetically for the mathematician, electrician, Quality Control Engineer, support team. We can also wire for random interaction, in the hopes o...

a neat amp is a sign of a sick mind.....
fuzzy placement reduces capacitance and inductance as well as offering an opportunity for discussion... You know, for USD 250K I'd have expected rather neater wiring... Very interesting & informative pictures - thanks for those... EDIT: Amplifier with about the same amount of "bling" f...

The sweetspot can be dealt with in creative ways
The best ESL (or dipole) setups for my ears have been so called LEDE rooms (live end/dead end) If the room is decently sized, the panels are placed at the live end and the back wave "fills in the holes". Pinpoint imaging is in my opinion one of the BIGGEST distortions in playback/recording...

not for everyone - an Apple solution
I use a macmini/iTunes with BitPerfect to a DAC of my choice and an iPod as the remote. No technical knowledge needed, it just works.

Re: what does this have to do with sound?
100% sure. Every waveform known to music can be reduced to its fundemental and overtones, the frequency and output determine the speed necessary to accurately follow the waveform. The math is quite easy. Still, it doesn't explain anything. There is an awful lot of spec assumptions based on air. I be...

what does this have to do with sound?
Instead of looking for a fictive reason for concern, would it not make more sense to simply listen to the woofer by itself, full range for a considerable amount of time to HEAR what it does to music in various frequency ranges? An accellerometer could quickly prove speed but not SOUND. Even if a spe...

ESL Blending
I think the BIGGEST problem has more to due with the entire system rather than the match at crossover. We have to match UHF extension with LF extension. If we are using a large ESL panel and no dedicated UHF driver, this could make the bottom sound completely wrong - and the woofer is not even at fa...

alternative goal?
My best TL results were when I stuffed for flattest impedance around resonance. I do admire the fine job here. Both the ESL and TL are beautiful and fit together well. I am pretty sure that the sound of the ESL will dictate how the line needs to be stuffed-otherwise the transition would be very audi...

Re: Crossed-Coax Speaker Cables
According to the cable designer, Jon Risch; "Cross-connection is used to reduce the inductance to an absolute minimum. Merely paralleling the center wire and shield would create two separated different polarity composite conductors with an inductance much higher than the cross-connected pair.&...
