Re: The Newton 300B

I must second it: these amps are sublime. They're not quite as good all-rounders as the Beasts, but the clarity and tone are amazing and there's a transparency that's not quite there with the others. As they continue to bed in we'll see whether their reproduction of the trickier recordings improves....

Re: What are your favourite reference recordings?

That 'Under The Bridge' cover by Stanley Clarke redeems what I personally believe to be the single most insipid Red Hot Chili Peppers track of all time. Very fine indeed. And the Shpongle is definitely the sort of thing that could give a system a good workout. I'm also a huge fan of that Marc Cohn r...

What are your favourite reference recordings?

This evening Dave and I are listening to the finished Newton 300b monoblocks with a few of our favourite reference records (and they are amazing, though it appears we have a bad 12SN7 valve so we're getting some crackling -- Dave will post about that later). It occurred to me that it would be intere...

Re: music production

I ran this thread by a friend of mine who's a multiple Grammy-nominated audio engineer and producer, though mostly retired now. If you're lucky he'll weigh in with his wisdom. He's also got a rather fine recently-rebuilt Thorens and has been making digital copies of some of his collection of out-of-...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Speaking of Elvis Costello, a producer/engineer friend of mine has been making digital transfers of some of the early records he worked on that are now unobtainium. Among them is a record by a band called The Killer Whales that was clearly heavily influenced by Elvis Costello and really pretty great...

Re: Nothing In Particular

It was a stereo cartridge with a 78 stylus on it. We have replaced it with an AT Mono3 4/SP, which is sounding spectacular so far. With this phono stage and cartridge, we're getting an immediacy to the music that we just weren't getting with the RIAA EQ from our Rotel amp/receiver. Surface noise see...

Re: Nothing In Particular

As Mr. Idler fussed with RCA cables at the back of the GL-72 (which cressy so lovingly restored for us), he suddenly commented, "Why I'm obsessing so much about getting the left and right channels the right way around for playing 78s is beyond me." Nevertheless, thanks to our new toy, the ...

Re: Tablet help.

I too am in the market for an Android tablet now, but I'm having a hard time deciding how much power I actually need. Samsung is top of my list right now (though I could be persuaded to look elsewhere). The two I'm considering are the GalaxyTab A 10.1" and the GalaxyTab S5e 10.5". The form...

Re: Opticians.

I've had excellent luck with Murgatroyd Holmes, who have offices in Staveley, Edlington, and Conisbrough. They provided an accurate prescription for me after Boots Opticians had screwed mine up twice, and their optician in Staveley is really first-rate and can work absolute magic. (I have a very nar...

Re: Remember These?

Steve's amp really does sound amazing! It did very nice things for some of our favourite records. Those valves *seriously* need the full steampunk treatment though!

Re: Audio Technica VM540ML

Dave and I got to listen to this yesterday, and it sounds absolutely fantastic and tracked perfectly even on a difficult LP. We'll probably be putting one of these on the travelling deck!

I can't believe you didn't put everything on hold so you could order the wire in a second colour. Your standards are slipping!
