Re: Nothing In Particular

Ethernet connectivity between my laptop and the CNC router is now flaky and dropping out frequently. Lead is fine when I checked it. Had a quick look for industrial rj45 connectors, but am drawing a blank for anything sub £100. As thought I would change the socket on the CNC to something you can sc...

Re: 401 bearing issues

Lubricating oils are designed to work over a certain temperature range, depending on the application.
So with motor oil I would be worried that the viscosity might be too high at room temp.
Slideway oil and fishing reel oil do sound like better candidates

Re: Nothing In Particular

See if you can find an adapter that allows you to fit current production batteries from Ryobi or someone to your Hitachi tool. I am planning to do the same to allow me to use my dewalt tools again, after the aftermarket batteries from Amazon died after a few cycles

Re: Nothing In Particular

I picked up the cable tester from Screwfix (identical model to Nick’s but different branding) Tested end to end (from the powerline all the way to the cabinet in the loft) and #4 was open. Then tested the in-wall cable on its own, and it checked out OK - big relief. Then tested all other cables and ...

Re: Graphic equalisers

I remember the days when graphic equalisers (along with FFT type displays) were common, often built into the system.
Some of them had a bypass or direct switch, and I can’t remember hearing a big difference.
I suppose there are filters - are they passive? Would they introduce phase lag?

Actually, looking at your photos, I reckon you've got that loop pretty small :-)

Re: Nothing In Particular

I've ordered that cable tester. I can't help thinking it's quite a coincidence that a few hours after I hooked up a powerline adapter for the new inverter in the garage, the powerline network stopped working.....and the fault turns out to be a network cable in the house that has been happy for proba...

Re: Nothing In Particular

You can run 100Mbs on two pairs if you can find two pairs that are still ok. Need a cable tester Brian Good idea, thanks Brian I used one of these to check the cable when I wired in the new office here (and just moved the other end last week in advance of getting rid of the old office/shed) https:/...

Re: Nothing In Particular

They were never supposed to work very well on different ring mains, though I never seemed to have much of a problem. Maybe they're better now, or maybe the 17m distance is an issue? That signal actually has to go from the lounge socket to the house consumer unit, through the cable from the house CU...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Aaargh Apologies, false alarm. The ISP router at the front of the house is connected to the middle of the house by a pair of ethernet cables. (I was only able to retro fit in-wall cabling to a couple of places in the house). One of those cables has decided to stop working. It happened to be the cabl...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Thanks Nick. There is an app for the powerline devices, and it is showing all 3 devices are on the same network. There is one in the lounge which is the 'hub', one in a bedroom which is showing 460 Bit/s, and the one in the garage which is showing 40MBit/s. Devices connected to the bedroom one repor...

Re: GM70 PP

I have found the same thing - although in my case the issue wasn't necessarily audible, sometimes it was just showing up on a scope, in which case it was very easy to see the benefit.
Might also be a safety thing?

Re: DIY Transistor Amp Using NVA Boards

I have been reading some of the links posted here recently about current flowing through wiring loops (http://www.valvewizard.co.uk/Grounding.pdf top of page 266 has a good diagram) The gist is that the transformer, rectifier, reservoir cap loop carries short, heavy pulses of current. So the recomme...

Re: Nothing In Particular

Looking for some advice please. We've just had some solar panels fitted to our garage roof. I didn't realise that we would need a network connection (for the inverter?). To get up and running I put a powerline adapter in the garage. It's kind of working, but the speed is very slow. The main problem ...
