Aye, still hits the spot with me too and a few weeks ago I bought it again on vinyl, a used copy. One of our local papers 'The Greenwich Visitor' has run a story for the last couple of issues pointing out that Bowie rehearsed for the Ziggy album at a local studio at the bottom of Blackheath Hill. It...

What really matters? Good question. I dunno. Could give the cliched answers but I honestly don't know. There's my personal thing then there's the thing I think I should support for everybody. Dunno. When young didn't notice the obvious, older I get I think this world is really quite incredible. How ...

As much as I liked band of gypsies (still remember listening to machine gun in bedsit|) I really didn't like how the black panthers pressured Hendrix to work with black musicians. There really was no need for that, Jimi got off on working with two UK white dudes and had his arm twisted. Still, that'...

Terry Reid

I was always aware of Terry Reid, knew who he was but never really heard any of his catalogue or got intop him until this year. He's still going strong, which is a good thing whether he's to your taste or not. I absolutely love this, to me it almost captures an era yet still (to me) sounds fresh. ht...

Nick - thanks for the info, I have LAME installed.

Chris: Thanks for the explanation, I used level 5 for all my CD's, have to admit mostly cos that was the default level the software came set at.

Since I purchased dbPoweramp I've installed it several times using the original activation code i was sent.

I use Audacity within Linux and Windows for recording and editing, it's good. Does it do conversion as well then?

There is a free version still available but it doesn't include mp3 encoding, here's a link as to what you get: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/db-versions.htm I still have the original free version which doesn't include FLAC facility but it does have an auxillary module plug-in which is very handy for mak...

S'alright, done me homework, I now understand that lossless is lossless, the level set for encoding is to do with the length of time it takes for the cpu(s) to encode and has some small influence on the eventual file size. I think. Well I never, this life is a constant source of learning is it not? ...

The software has a sliding scale of quality for FLAC Err, how does that work. FLAC is lossless, its either correct, or broken, no grey area. I have no idea. All I know is that when I convert a CD to FLAC files I'm offered a level to do it at. I assumed it was to do with quality but from your statem...

I've also been using dbPoweramp for years, it's very good. It used to be free but as it grew to include more functions the publishers decided to charge. It currently costs around £25.00 depending on exchange rate. I have just finished converting around 1600 CD's to FLAC using dbPoweramp, took me 21 ...

I'm also VAT registered but it's still a real cash outlay, regardless of deducting the VAT from VAT received several months after purchase. Just musing, high street shops are dying whereas the Internet is blooming. High street shops have to rent, internet sites have to charge postage. I often wonder...

I wish I'd had access to that when I was studying for City & Guilds Part III but back in '87 I'd never even touched a computer. Twas all books and biros.
