I was soul destroyed that the £200 I have invested in Sowter TVC's was the worst of all. I am quite sure that you have found a gem. Hmmm maybe I ought to be careful before moving into the TVC arena. Possible disappointment there. For little more than the price of a pair of the aforementioned Audio ...

Bugger!

The six that were left after I bought my two have all gone.
Better take good care of the ones I have then :)

I've used steppers, shunted ALPS etc and these 45 year old Allen Bradley carbon pots knock the lot of them into a cocked hat.Steve Really! Yep really! I'm afraid on this business of pots, shunted or otherwise Greg you and I are poles apart. Same with 300Bs. They suit your system and ears fine. I OT...

To the young and impressionable: Watch out sor that Shadow character. He's not a very discerning listener, far too easily pleased, much given to hype, hysterics, the vapours and mood swings. The Mrs Bennett of hi-fi is a good description I think. As an audio critic he's a dead loss...wouldn't know a...

At last I have managed to find a mono pot that is not some crappy low quality piece of garbage. Our Ant put me on to them at the weekend. I bought a pair of vintage 1960s Allen Bradley 250K switched log pots for a fiver each off Ebay seller "Strictly Vintage Electrics" They looked quite su...

But does it sound fizzy? No cos I downloaded it from iTunes  Seriously though it is a very good sounding album in hi-fi terms. It was self produced and recorded in an analogue studio using real musicians and a real orchestra. The track I pointed to is nothing like the rest, so I would urge any...

Jonathan Jeremiah

Cracking song, heard it on Chris Evans' show the other day. Could quite easily be mistaken for vintage Northern Soul. Great for Summer. Mr Jeremiah sounds like Tom Jones, Jerry Butler, Lou Rawls and Cat Stevens all rolled into one. His album "A Solitary Man" is highly recommended (by me...

I've been running two versions of the monos today. 1. the anode follower version 2. a cathode feedback version via the cathode bypass cap of the output stage This is fed from the unused 8R tap of the OPT secondary. Here they are side by side for comparison. http://web.me.com/scress1958/Pictures/pl50...

What! you've got one too Mike? I tried 300K today and felt that it gave a slight improvement at the very top end, but 220K ought to be sufficient. Go over 300K and the clarity the amp shows turns into brashness, go even further and the bass falls apart, so anything between 220 - 300K feedback resist...

Yellow can look like orange in a certain light! :D Hence I often Ohmmeter them to make sure :) So the amps have undergone a bit of a transformation today. http://web.me.com/scress1958/Pictures/pl509endgame.gif The feedback was reduced by reverting to the 220K resistor from the first iteration. The ...

Mo wrote:What was Al's amp, a sakuma SEP or PP EL84 or something completely different?
Al's amp was a PP EL84 using the Sakuma EL84 driving EL84 method.
This is the DIY paradiso SimpleEL84. Great sound.

Andrew I played a similar one on Sunday but in his own words it was Sh1te in comparison.

Funnily enough I too came back inspired to put right the weedy sound of my SEP monoblocks.

Once again they stand tall, destroy all comers and leave even the mighty 833s cowering in their majestic presence

Picky point, should it not be 8ma on the cathode resistor adding the .3ma from the pentode anode. Aye I'll have to attend to that :) @Paul There is no U/L tap on my OPTs so I can't do ultra-linear. I could use triode mode then there would be no need for the feedback. I know Mr I did a screen drive ...
