Hi Stuart, The older ECC81s seem to have thicker micas. There doesn't seem to be a difference in the anode structures between old and newer versions yet the yellow print ones seem to sound bigger with more bones on the sound, if you know what I mean. Looks a good project paul, i would agree with sticking to the mov valves, There seems little point to me to messing around trying take a step forward better circuit and then tacking too steps backward putting inferior valves in... Went last night to see Leonard Cohen, what a fantasic new venue leeds has now in the arena.. ...and leonard was pretty good too, we had a really good night , he played all night with no support act ...must have been 3 hours in all, not bad for a gent of his age...he regularly went down onto his knee...

Try using the DAC in the receiver against the analog output of the DVD, see if there is a difference. Maybe look at one of the cheap DAC kits off ebay, maybe look at the t-amps and that sort of thing. What I am suggesting is may be able to get more improvements by keeping the DVD as a digital sourc...
