Re: Triode mode.

I read the article, but he gave no real reasons for not using the pentode mode. I am getting such wonderful performance with a 307A super and EL84 in the RH pentode circuits that I wonder why someone feels the urge to "waste" so much power.

Re: On the use of names...

The 1975 RCA Receiving Tube Manual that I have states that the 6CA7/EL34 is a "Power Pentode". It also shows all three grids independently accessible. Here is a page on the different EL 34s: http://www.tubecollection.de/ura/EL34_Varianten.htm As far as the semantics of tube descriptions, c...

Fane Colossus neodymium for sound and saving weight

I had also purchased the Sovereign 500 drivers and then I heard the Colossus Neodymium 12" drivers. Simply no comparison - and the Colossus are much lighter (would be good if the speaker has to be transportable). I am using the Colossus now on my home system - outperforming any other 12" (...

One hour?

I practice trumpet more than that - as does every other working musician. I don't see a bunch of deaf conductors, I guess the study is bogus, or sponsored by earplug manufacturers.

Life after Pono

My personal take is why bother? It isn't the audiophile community that killed Pono, it is the lack of "need" for more of the same. If Pono had any true technical or musical advantage, then perhaps it would have had a chance. Look at David Cheskys company HD Tracks, there at least we get SO...

Don't forget Focusrite

I am using a Focusrite Forte with a decent analog power supply and BitPerfect software on a MacMini and am VERY happy with the results.

My digital playback has a certain immediacy that I really like. If you don't oversample, you get even better results!

No blanket damnation from me

I have learned that EVERYTHING makes some difference, however miniscule. When I change the impedance of a power cord, the capacitance of an interconnect, the resistance of speaker wire, things happen that have nothing to do with fidelity. Many times they are measurable, but we have no language to di...

Re: Cleaning CDs & DVDs

I have that one that I use to clean all sorts of stuff, trumpet mouthpieces, watchbands, jewelry, tools. I am not sure about cleaning CDs. I have seen ultrasound be rough on plastic and if the edge of the CD was not completely sealed, I would think that something could get between the polycarbonate ...

Leftovers

I don't think that a DC measurement of the OPT means anything when they are that close. Hum with a simple 300B SE amp is normal and there are in my opinion two valid solutions: DC or high frequency AC. For both strategies there are multiple solutions. Andrew here at Audio-Talk has some regulators fo...

Re: Ralph Amp - Thoughts?

I generally approach an amp from the speaker side. In this case they claim 8 Watts with push/pull 6b4Gs. The only part of the article that bothers me is the BS about contamination being lower with a transformer than a cap and resistor for instance. That would be a tough claim to defend......... I am...

is there a link between dispersion and sweet spot?

I am not sure that there is a link between the two even if the audiophile press keeps repeating it because people believe it blindly. I think that the problem is that the large surface area screws the sound up by phase error (which can be primitively displayed as less dispersion - but there is MUCH ...

Other factors

Could this effect simply be "bad" electricity? The power grid is subject to all sorts of disturbances and I have found that aggressive treble can come and go - or disappear completely when hooked up to a regenerating UPS. The change in conditions was going IN to the power supply. In fact I...

Placebo or not?

I have really mixed feelings about questions like this. On the one hand, if you disagree with the principle, you get clobbered so, how is a REALLY HONEST reply even possible? I think there is no argument about transducers. The question is, do they ever break in, or do we need to continuously exerciz...

an xover is more than phantom values

Replacing parts in a speaker is not trivial if the result is supposed to be better than it is now. Voicing the speaker generally needs more than one shot. I have had good luck using a mini DSP and a couple of amplifiers to get the general voicing right, then duplicating what I determined to be good ...
