Re: Longdog Audio PH-1 and HA-1 Review

What the hell is wrong with the reviewers mains/wifi setup? I can play my stuff with (well filtered) laptop on and full wifi, even to a Chromecast Audio connected to it, and not a sound in the background, or any sonic change with it switched off. My downstairs gear is antiquated too and designed in ...

Re: jvc ql-y5f restoration

No idea if it's good enough for you, but the Techie shell is rigid and low mass I think. Stick some posher wires on it and I think it's fine enough. used to work well with the AT440MLa at the time...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Nah - this is a pair of fifteen ohm HF1300's initially fed from a tapped radio-type inductor and set far too high in level for the main drivers now being used, so the only way now to reduce said level is an L-pad (I had specialist help in the initial resistor values but it wasn't enough). Interestin...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Things have moved on, but I wanted to clear the air a bit with Steve if I may and apologise again for the way I sometimes appear to come over on forums. Remember when I mentioned getting a reference speaker of some kind to help prevent you 'playing' with tweeter levels (I know, you've gone WELL beyo...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

Had a Siouxsie moment, so been playing 'Ju Ju,' 'Kiss In The Dreamhouse' and 'Tinderbox!' The first album has little top and the other two all but scream at you whatever the format ;)

Took me back to happy 80's times I have to say...

Re: Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club

I can only recount a story of back in the bad old Naim days, when placing one of their preamps close (ish) to the HiCap power supply would induce a small bit of hum at very high volume levels to go with the hiss already there. Even with the lower musical resolution of a Naim small-form preamp (32.5 ...

Re: Quad ESL57 electrostatics

If plugged in after a long time in storage, they can take many hours to fully 'charge' and sort themselves out. My now late friends pair had the extra (over-power) protection boards fitted and they sounded superb like this with a Quad 606 driving them for some years up until her passing a few years ...

Re: Burhoe Inspired Room Flooder

Sorry for the can of worms - something better discussed over a few pints and with gear to try to demonstrate. Twenty five years ago, the big active speakers I referred to and owned weren't so hot at very low levels although pains were taken to improve this a lot after I sold mine. By geriatric Spend...

Re: Burhoe Inspired Room Flooder

But that's the point - you CAN reproduce the sound of a live unamplified jazz group artificially in a living room if the recording is good enough and the monitors powerful and 'clean' enough - and so many 1950's CD transfers are amazingly 'real.' You just need proper big monitors with clarity and a ...

Re: Burhoe Inspired Room Flooder

Not sure I agree with your pov. I owned and loved a pair of ATC 100A monitors twenty odd years ago and only sold them when I got married and we didn't have enough room for a 'pair of fridges,' as herself calls them. These were the only bit of 'gear' I wept over when they went to their new owner, wri...

Re: Burhoe Inspired Room Flooder

Laugh all you like with this suggestion, but I reckon it's a good idea to have a stock pair of well liked 'classic' production speakers as a reference when setting the perceived balance and so on in kit-built speakers from scratch. I appreciate the 'different' way these speakers 'drive' the room com...

Re: Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

I bet the Chromecast Audio analogue output won't sound so different from the Dacmagic if levels are matched... It would be nice to stream my FLAC and WAV files from the PC upstairs to the main system via the Chromecast Audio, but I think I have to download SlimServer or similar and do a lot of faffi...

Re: lentek head amp upgrade

I also have the Ortofon cheapie twin sut's (T5?) in Sony badging and rather better, the AT630 SUT in Dual badging (Dual did have a Dual-badged version of the AT30 MC) - neither are state of the art in sut's but the AT630 was good lower cost all-rounder I remember. When I get the chance, I'll try it ...

Re: lentek head amp upgrade

Thanks for understanding vibes above. See, whatever crap I spout, it's up to you *at the time* with the gear you own and use and how you use it. The MC's I have here offer rather more hf than a 'typical' 103 and from old memories, a 103 'typically' has a more velvet beefy sound rather more like the ...

Re: lentek head amp upgrade

I did mine many years ago now with assistance from an AOS member - I forget who and apologies if they remember, as they sent me some Oscons to fit in replacement for the tants originally fitted. My board wasn't potted so easier to modify. Any better for it? Nah, it's still hissy and brightly lit to...
