Re: Something stirs in the Undergrowth

This may be of interest ( maybe not ). After putting in 'Black' instead of 'Blue' wires to the FX120's, I had a loss of lower mids, a slight thinning of the tone. I decided just to try adjusting the capacitor value in the series crossover to see if it was fixable that way The cap in these crossovers...

Re: The Audio-Talk Cycling thread.

Good effort. 'course the weather was nice round here :) Another walk, a little bit further, along the ridge. The rain in last 2 or 3 days has turned the path back into a mud-bath in many places. Quite difficult to stay upright, but I did. Stats 2:09:44 at avg bpm of 133. I think that's progress , gi...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

One interesting thing was, we kept finding a noticeable peak and dip around 60-70Hz. It was odd as it appeared in almost the same amplitude on the mid driver traces - was many dB lower - as the bass driver trace. SimonC explained to us that his computer analysis of my room shape & dimensions had ind...

Re: Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

Ah, thanks for clarification. Very good. Here is the full system again but with the bass polarity swapped. This is a much clearer result than we had from listening. ALI_Nov23_ii.jpg The compression tweeter comes in just with a 1uF cap. I thought this was too high and it does look like it's wrong as ...

Ali Bastanis OB testing & results

I should have posted this a while back but it got busy before Christmas. We had a small get-together at my place late November. I'm not sure what to call it, but of the options, 'Pink-meet' sounds the funniest. Anyhow, amongst other things Ali demonstrated his current set-up with Bastanis 'OB' speak...

Re: Some thoughts on Vitamin D, flu, etc

If Ali had said "One benefit of being ginger, your body can produce healthy levels of D at low sun light levels." would we have been OK for you optics guys? Yes, it's being an optics guy that is the problem. I'm currently involved in designing a night-vision objective lens. When we talk about 'low ...

Re: Some thoughts on Vitamin D, flu, etc

Well, one difference is that 'light' is not the same as 'UV'. UV is the stuff below 400nm , light goes from approx. 400nm to 700nm wavelength. To be fair there is some looseness in the general use of 'light' as a word, I prefer to use 'light' purely to describe visible light, I think most of my coll...

Re: Some thoughts on Vitamin D, flu, etc

I'm trying to be accurate ( aka pedantic ) about the language used here. Nobody can produce vitamin D in their skin at 'low light levels'.
What having pale skin and red hair does, is allow you to produce enough vitamin D in lower UV levels than other people.

Re: Some thoughts on Vitamin D, flu, etc

Yes, certainly - that's why it evolved as people migrated North . You did say 'at low light levels' ! - The adaption is for 'Northern European sunshine levels' :) ps. For evidence of what is a meaningful dose, how quickly you can raise it, how quickly it drops without supplements, what is toxic, etc...

Re: Some thoughts on Vitamin D, flu, etc

Correct, it's not true. Only UV-B getting through to the relevant layers of the skin can produce vitamin D. There's very little UV-B that gets through the atmosphere when the sun is below 45°to the ground.

Re: Some thoughts on Vitamin D, flu, etc

That would be handy if it was true :) Perhaps this is what my ginger Canadian friend at work was thinking.
My schedule is sliding to the right at the moment, as you say, Mike. I have a number of audio jobs that I need to start , just summoning-up the motivation.

Not sure instantaneous results should be expected.
Typically the downsides will happen quicker than the plus sides !
However if you don't believe a supplement can have an instant effect, try taking 500mg of Niacin ...

Re: The Audio-Talk Cycling thread.

I have felt exhausted and stiff from a 40min ride in some years recently -sounds like it was a good distance to try - it's always improved pretty rapidly by 15min increments from there, when I re-started.
