Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

Solsbury Hill ! Having listened to the rest of the album on Youtube though, Chris, it seemed a bit patchy. What do you think ? Listening to this at the moment (PG1-Car that is) - not sure what you mean by patchy but the album features quite a variety of 'styles' and my recording is pretty good with...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

As a result of the Pachelbel CD that featured in my Valve DAC project thread there were a couple of posts about Pachelbel being a bit of a one hit wonder - anyway they prompted me to dig this out for a listen;

Re: Digital.

I too will be interested in how it sounds and look forward to reading how you get on... Yes and thanks, it'll be an interesting journey. I'm starting with an open mind rather than an assumption that valves will automatically be better but it'll be fun to do something other than the usual modern ESS...

Re: Valve DAC

Valve complement is 6 x E88CC (each delta sigma core uses three) plus an 85A2 for the reference voltage.

I've got a Mullard 85A2 but I'll probably get some Russian 6922s for the cores, at least to start with.

Re: Valve DAC

The PCBs I picture above aren't the full story, in time I'll need an output board equipped with the necessary reconstruction filters. Also, whilst the main PCB has power supplies on it for the B+ and 5V digital requirements, as well as AC heaters for the DAC core valves, I'm not going to populate th...

Re: Valve DAC

To get the SDM data to the valve DAC I've built an HQ Player network appliance based on a Beaglebone Black and equipped with an isolator/reclocker. The appliance takes the SDM stream from HQ Player and passes it to the DAC input - it works at up to DSD512.

Re: Valve DAC

So, I've buddied up with another DIY Audio member and we shared the cost of getting some rather expensive PCBs made up. They're expensive because they're large 4 layer boards but they also required a custom layer stack, specified by the designer. Here's an image of the PCBs with a CD for scale; http...

Valve DAC

I mentioned this project over on the 'Digital' section so I guess it's time to start a thread here. The terrible thing though is that I'm guilty of breaking my personal pledge to not start another project until I got the other ones finished but you know how it goes, I got into an exchange with the d...

Re: Digital.

I guess that as the cat is out of the bag I'll start a project thread for the valve DAC.

Re: Digital.

I have read that article in Linear Audio and its impressive. But call me cynical that any design that includes a FPGA could really be called a valve dac, more of a dac with valves. Semantics to some extent but the FPGA operates solely in the digital domain and you could choose to send the data from...

Re: Digital.

The designer of the valve DAC has also been experimenting with an unconventional silicon based decoder; https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/313520-74ahc02-74ahc08-dac-97-db-dynamic-range.html as is another chap; https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/341276-dac-project-fpg...

Re: Digital.

Would it be possible to divulge the identity of this remarkable piece of kit ? Of course, though it's not a piece of kit but a design for DIY building. It has a valve-based delta-sigma (or sigma-delta) core. There's a thread about it on DIY Audio; https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/...

Re: The Audio-Talk Cycling thread.

What a beautiful crisp, clear and bright early autumn morning today. A bit on the chilly side though when I headed out at 7:00 this morning for a 25mile loop up onto the Blackown Hills; leggings, base layer and proper gloves were the order of the day. Another good week all in, 118miles total and 6,5...
