Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

This looks like a stonking bargain - allegedly supports up to 24/96 files, will work with services like Qobuz, has an optical digital output that can be used with a decent DAC. To me this looks like quite an easy solution to a problem I've been trying to solve for some time - how to play back our ri...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Hooray - I finally got a number for the bending allowance. Now I can generate the remaining two FPD files and get a final cost...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

I was overcharged for that chassis, just interested in what the number was that put Dave in a darkened room. I think for now I'll just say "a lot". I think it'll be worth it though. These things are going to be in the living room next to each speaker - they have to look good as well as sound good.

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Construction of the two monoblocks will require the fabrication of 18(!) panels in total. I have finished building the FPD (front panel designer) files for the first 16, outstanding are the two cream coloured top panels (where the valve sockets and transformers etc sit) with the 5mm inner diameter b...

Re: Rectifier heater failure question

Thanks Nick - I did wonder if it was down to some part of the heater filament touching another part internally, if it had broken. It all tested out fine this afternoon in any case.

Rectifier heater failure question

Hi all, Getting my old JuicyMusic Blueberry valve preamp ready for sale, found that it kept blowing the main power supply fuse at switch-on. Could not identify any burnt out components, then decided to test the valves on a (pretty basic) valve tester, starting with the 12X4 rectifier. The tester ind...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

The CAD work for the Beasts is nearing completion, I just have to 'mirror image' the housing bracket layout and it'll be about done.

Here is how the mirror imaged pair are expected to look:

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Came across a particularly evil bug in my CAD software yesterday - you're always told to save your work regularly and I do that as a matter of course, as the software is a little bit 'crashy' - especially as my version is several years old and I'm too tight / poor to upgrade to the latest. It does t...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Hi Ray - I couldn't get the site to respond this morning but if it's the one I think it is, yes I have seen it before and I like it a lot! (apart from the blue LED's). The look of mine was inspired more by the Atmasphere amps. Figuring out the construction detail is proving very tedious and time con...

Re: Safely powering an 'on' light

Heh yeah - until the day comes when it's plugged into balanced power and then neutral is at -120V potential. I actually re-examined the bulb assembly this afternoon (to check I had the cutout correct in CAD) and you're right Nick - you'd actually have to unscrew the bezel, remove the bulb and poke a...

Safely powering an 'on' light

My Transcendent Beast OTL power amp design includes a Fender amp-style incandescent 12V pilot light bulb on the front panel, powered from the heater circuit. The Beast has two heater circuits (from the two 12V secondaries) which are floating. One circuit supplies the bank of output valves that have ...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Doing the CAD is fun - very professional! Thanks very much - it's quite relaxing mostly, although a lot of yesterday was spent staring at my screen and scratching my head trying to fathom out how to arrange all the standoffs so as not to end up with a catch-22 situation at build time - where fittin...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Finalised CAD drawing for the soft-start and DC blocking assembly. Both Rod Elliot circuits, although I've upped the capacitance a bit on the DC blocker by having three 2200uF caps in parallel per side (makes more efficient use of the available space than having one big cap per side). Also includes ...

Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Started populating a few parts on the Beast circuit boards last week but the bulk of my recent efforts has been on reworking the chassis layouts (again!). The preamp went through many reworks and the same is proving true of the power amps. This thing has three big toroids in each monoblock - 500VA, ...

Re: Standby power.

Good question, my impression is that a lot of this stuff is designed to be powered into standby with the remote control handset for customer convenience. We have a Samsung smart TV and I think it receives updates overnight when it's put into standby. The linestage I've just completed, as some of you...
