Re: Dieselpunk Preamp of Doom and the Beast with Two Backs

Slow progress of late but last week whilst snowed in, I worked on populating the main circuit boards. Electrolytics are mostly high temp Panasonics, all fast recovery diodes (UF4007, FR605-T), 2W resistors are Vishay CPF series metal films rather than metal oxide, 0.5W are Takman metal films aside f...

I'm quite impressed with the Mash here for finding a stock pic with a Garrard 401 in it...

Re: Floating signal grounds?

A 10 Ohm 1 watt resistor between the chassis/PE and signal ground/star. Nelson Pass uses an NTC thermistor in a lot of his designs. That's what I would do too. Hang on though - is that 10R resistance even needed in this case? Won't hurt, but should stop a hum loop, and you've had bother with that t...

Re: Floating signal grounds?

Hang on though - is that 10R resistance even needed in this case? I'm using input transformers, one of their benefits is the breaking up of ground loops. The incoming signal hot and cold phase will be on pins 2 and 3 of the XLR, connected to the floating primary, with pin 1 (shield) connected to cha...

Re: Floating signal grounds?

Interesting idea about the thermistors, as it happens I have two spare CL-60's. They were originally specified for the inrush current limiting but I've since decided to replace them with an active soft-start circuit per Rod Elliott, which will also more elegantly integrate the remote 12V power-up / ...

Floating signal grounds?

Hi, I'd like to put a question to the knowledgable if I may. The never ending Transcendent Beast OTL project is moving glacially forward and I've run into something which looks a bit odd to me. As it's a copyrighted design I can't post the schematic, but the circuit signal grounds all tie back to a ...

Uh oh. I've got an outstanding click-and-collect order with them that's yet to be fulfilled.

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

Tonight I cued up "Bert Kaempfert And His Orchestra: A Swingin' Safari" on Qobuz. This is such a fun LP and, as has been mentioned previously on this forum, the production quality is absolutely first rate. So much so that I realised that I'd had the Mets not quite toed in enough since I plonked them...

Re: 2A3 "Pink SET" Amp Rebuild.

It does show how much hum and crud will affect the perceived sounds. I had experience of this the other day actually. I'd made up some XLR cables to connect the balanced outputs of the Whest phono stage and newly acquired CA Dacmagic to the two balanced inputs I'd provided for myself on the recentl...

Re: Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

The DACMagic arrived today, this one came with an aftermarket power supply which I assume to be a linear one given the size and weight of the case it's in. I don't know how much of a contribution the power supply is making, but it's quite a significant step up from both the Musical Fidelity V-DAC Mk...

Re: Signal Relays

The AMB preamp I built recently uses telecoms grade Panasonic AGN2104H miniature latching DPDT relays for input switching, and in the ladder attenuator. These are latching relays and are very compact, possibly too compact if you're hard-wiring though.

Re: Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

It's a nice little device isn't it? I've had way-worse sounding CD players.

I'd really recommend giving Qobuz a go - you get 30 free days trial so can cancel if it's not for you, at no cost. The audio quality leaves Spotify in the dust.

Re: Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

It would be nice to stream my FLAC and WAV files from the PC upstairs to the main system via the Chromecast Audio, but I think I have to download SlimServer or similar and do a lot of faffing about to get it to happen. Have a look at Plex - I've got this installed on my iMac desktop in the office a...

Re: Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

Really interested to see how you get on with it. Is Qobuz plain vanilla "CD" FLAC or HD? It depends on the service you sign up for - there are four tiers. The bottom tier is the same price as Spotify and you get 320kbps MP3 for that. The next one up is the one I have, and that's 16-Bit 44.1 kHz FLA...

Re: Anyone had experience with the Google Chromecast Audio?

Thanks for the input everyone! I decided to pull the trigger on one at the beginning of the week and it arrived today. Quite surprising how good the onboard DAC is for £30! I've currently got it streaming some lossless Mendelssohn choral music via Qobuz and I'm really impressed with it. It also work...
