Any weight you add to the headshell, loads weight onto the stylus and its cantilever, so it just digs deeper into the groove and will ultimately cause damage to both the groove and the stylus. It also upsets the Vertical Tracking Angle ( VTA), hence the sound gets worse. You need to add a small amo...

Nick,
Thanks.
I should probably get myself a test disc.

The main issue with adding mass was that on audiophile/Dj pressings there was significant break up in passages of heavy bass. Could this have been a resonant frequency issue?

On the other hand, if it's just an excuse to get together a group of people with a common interest, to bounce some ideas around and listen to some music then it has some merit. Just my penn'orth Ray Hopefully it will serve this purpose! :D There's certainly been plenty of interest from people who i...

Yes. BDP = Bluray Disc Player.
They play CDs, DVD(video)s and Bluray discs.
In fact in my experience, as transports they play CDs better than do similarly priced CDPs. Why this might be the case? I don't know.

...From Gloucester

Hi,

New to Audio-talk. Seems nice here.

Music-wise I like jazz, female vox, quality hip-hop and 60s & 70s pop.

System-wise it's a Pioneer PL-71 with Decca Super Gold and a Sony BDP into a MuFi Dac.
Amplifiers, cables and speakers are all NVA.

Looking forward to my time on the forum.

I've noticed that of the players I've tried, BDP sound better through my DAC (Musical Fidelity A3 24 192k upsampler) than do CDPs via (all via coax digi outputs). Has anyone else noticed this? Are Bluray transports in some way generally superior? Or are these perceived differences purely coincidenta...

Putting on weight

I've been using a Decca Super Gold in a PL-71 for about a year now. In my more idle moments I have been experimenting with adding and removing mass from the headshell. I've found that for my ears, additional mass causes more problems than it solves. Obviously my ears are the ultimate arbiters of how...

Update!

An update on the Hallowe'en London bake-off show: Preparations for the bake-off show are at an advanced stage, and room bosses are readying themselves for the off. The occasion is best viewed as a bake-off event on a grand scale, rather than a show per-se. We now have a website that provides details...
