Re: Nothing In Particular

This is worth playing with: http://kazuyanagae.com/20220103OrchMIX/ Click "Play" to start the music, and then choose which mic(s) you'd like to hear. Classical recording requires rather different approaches to close-mic'd stuff I usually do, so it's interesting from a sound engineering per...

Re: Do Car Main dealers rip people off ?

so STFU unless you can say anything that makes sense. Bit strong there, Phil. Would you seriously say that in person? As mentioned in another thread, I bought a car recently - a Mazda CX-30 from the local Mazda dealer. Chap at the dealership said their margins were thin post-Covid. My best haggling...

Well done on recognising and breaking the cycle, Steve.

Phew. I was worried for a moment there. It was a nice little amp, that one, but wouldn't suit my current system.

Eee, ‘eck! When I were your age, laddie, that were the definition of a new subframe!

Was an old subframe where you could see the tarmac going past beneath your feet?

Re: Nothing In Particular

Unrelated news: I've bought a car. The Polo (2003, 137k miles on the clock) was a hand-me-down that I inherited by carrying on getting it MOT'd and serviced. Unfortunately, it had developed enough problems that passing MOTs was going to get difficult and expensive: - Burning oil at a rate of 1L per ...

Re: Salad Bowl Speakers

Cheers Chris. I was planning to have a quick listen but then, before I knew what was happening, I was applying the finishing oil. They're just bare inside at the moment, no lining or stuffing - any thoughts on that, particularly any lining you think might be good? I picked up a big roll of recycled...

Looking excellent. Well done.
I'm surprised you haven't thrown the drivers in and had a listen - I know I wouldn't be able to resist.

I played "No Harm Is Done", but in hindsight, "Tilted" is the better demo - the extra layers as the song goes along IMO makes it a more interesting piece of music.

Re: Salad Bowl Speakers

Attached is a before/after of a Faital 10HX230 in a ported cabinet. I was using 1/2" thick recycled wool underlay to cover the internal panels, adding layers until the ripples in the impedance curve were no longer obvious. Also visible is the slight alteration in LF alignment. It was down a dB ...

Mike,
What you really want to build is a big pair of speakers

It was good to see everyone again, and thanks to Steve for hosting. I hope there'll be something organised for next year. Gives me an excuse to cook up some more speakers.

Re: Something Stirs in the Workshop

A couple of notes on that: - The room at Owston always makes a mess of the bass. Dipole systems fair a bit better, but they come with their own set of challenges. - In general, there's a distortion and damping factor penalty in running amps at 2ohm. I'd consider wiring the drivers in series and adju...

Re: New speakers!!!

Hi Ray,

I'm glad they'll be going to a good home.
These are cheaper than the Tang Band units: https://www.soundimports.eu/en/dayton-a ... 165-4.html

And look like they'd perform a similar role.

Re: Owston ( now darios) what are you bringing

If your DSP/DAC is external (ie, you can feed outputs elsewhere), you're welcome to borrow the afore-mentioned Crown, or the Powersoft amps I'll be bringing. The latter have DSP baked-in, so the Crown is probably preferable.

Re: Owston ( now darios) what are you bringing

I'm torking cobblers again I'm using them today, obviously haven't listened to them for a long while, they do do bass, the 'issue' (if it is an issue) was / is, a bass resonance which can get irritating, depending what's being played. Memory eh? It can't be trusted! :D Bring them along, Mike. I'll ...
