Re: Blackgate Caps

Other power supply caps to use instead of Black Gates (no. one capacitor choice) I havent built with any other electrolytics since I bought WKZ’s. I like polyprops. But they alter the sound quite a lot, however the ressult is pleasant sounding. I far prefer to polyprops the old pio caps of low value...

Re: Blackgate Caps

I can speak for wkz’s only. Theyre good, but they’re noticeable, i.e. not invisible and fully allowing unaltered sound pass through. They’re best left on 24/7 and take a week at least to get back to that level if interrupted.

They’re still electrolytic caps though.

Re: Basics of valve amplifiers

As youve bought some alternative small signal valves, read what Stephie said on tube rolling. “Are all tubes of the same "type" the same? No. Ever wonder why one manufacturers tubes "sound" different than anothers? Here are four sets of 12AX7 curves. 12AX7CHI.GIF shows a Chinese 12AX7, 12AX7TES.GIF ...

Re: GM70 PP

The link is part of the miscelaneus section of Stephie’ tube pages. It’s a useful comparrison of this transmitting valve life expectancy, and the small signal valves of the report. up to 85 years life expectancy. https://jacmusic.com/techcorner/SBENCH ... belife.txt

Re: Basics of valve amplifiers

No problem Nick. No need to say sorry, it’s all true. Most of what we do casual enquirers seldom end up doing. we pass on our thoughts, we don’t attach a directive to advice.

Re: Basics of valve amplifiers

Thank you for that. From your post it looks like I can swap out the valves for the same type and I would guess that's what the previous owner did to get the GE Bramar combination of the same type. Would swapping to a matched pair of same type but different manufacturer make much difference. Now con...

Can’t you laminate it? Or space two sheets then fill gap with sandpit sand?

I’m learning to build a valve amp instead
I've got the 833a with a James D A2 buffer to do next, then perhaps rejuvenate my 811 amp.

So I've not given upon valves.

Re: Basics of valve amplifiers

Yes I’ve got some nos Mullard military ecc82 last time I looked anything from 50 to 100 each. Not worth it, but I’m not letting mine go at the minute. Bostod regards what makes big differences. If circuit built right valves working right. Coupling caps, transformers rectifiers resistors would all im...
