Re: DIY Transistor Amp Using NVA Boards

Have a look in that wireless world 'high fidelity designs' book I lent you, there's the jlh circuit and a whole load of theory in there to go with it although it does seem to assume a certain amount of knowledge, but the theory bit did seem relatively simple even to me who knows less than the square...

Re: Microscope for cartridge diamond tips

Exactly John, the Hana is an sl so a 600 quid cart which isn't in my budget. Taking a punt on it cost me 35 quid. There is nothing wrong with it. Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that not cleaning the stylus degrades performance to the point where it can sound broken, and even less surprising give...

Re: Microscope for cartridge diamond tips

I just use a 60x jewellers loupe with an led light in it to look at them, about a fiver. Good enough to tell if there is damage to the tips, you can see the facets well enough to assess wether you want to use the cart. Assessing is the difficult bit, you need to look at a known good low hour stylus ...

Re: What Are You Listening To Right This Minute?

Police - ghost in the machine Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon, a rather special copy of it. my wife got me an original 1979 Japanese pressed (jvc) mobile fidelity copy for Christmas. She found it in a tiny record shop in Leeds while Christmas shopping and miraculously recognised it for what it wa...

Possibly the greatest drummer ever imo. Always seems to be 10 beats ahead, the last word in precision.
Such a talent only seems to come along once in any generation.
Rest in peace

Cole lcr phono stage rebuild

I've acquired the Cole phono stage that Nigel wanted me to look at. A lovely lovely sounding unit, but it does want some work. As shown earlier, the s&b Mc transformers are completely fried, and when I spoke to them they said to send them down to them to see if they can be rescued. If not, I'll get ...

Re: custom turntable build

It's something you notice after a couple of LP's, say an hour or so, a slight hardness to strings and vocals. Nothing is perfect It does get on your tits after a while. What I'd like to do is get another jbe in an acrylic plinth and compare the slate and the plastic Or make an acrylic plinth for the...

Re: custom turntable build

I don't know how old the verus is tbh, the cuing lever under the motor is on an milled aluminum plate, I'm not sure wether the part is one that Vic had made specifically for the salvation but it looks like it to me as it matches other salvation parts in terms of finish. Interestingly the deck sounds...

Another one for chipboard, my fanes are a mix of chipboard and ply. Ime Mdf is fine for small panels and oddly shaped panels, but crap for big panels.
Those drivers look quite good for sealed boxes too by the looks of the numbers
