Re: Trying to Understand Resistors & Lpads with Bass Drivers

Thanks chaps. That all makes sense and also explains what might happen if you get the L-Pad resistor values out of line with what's needed for a particular DB cut.

Re: Trying to Understand Resistors & Lpads with Bass Drivers

I fully agree that a separate amp is the way to go if possible and the fewer bits and pieces you have in the signal path the better. I was thinking of a situation where (a) a second amp is not practical and (b) where one is trying to balance a multi-way system where the bass driver output exceeds th...

Trying to Understand Resistors & Lpads with Bass Drivers

I'm trying to get to grips with the effect of resistors and Lpads on bass drivers and particularly how they may affect the T/S parameters. My understanding (which may well be faulty) is as follows: 1. A single series resistor on a bass driver will attenuate output but at the same time increase the Q...

Scandyna A30 Rebirth

An old pair of Scandyna A30s with new tweeters and crossover (ok, just a resistor and capacitor on the tweeter in fact) have been my mainstay speakers for a while. However, the tweeter position is not ideal, being nearly half way down the baffle. I have also recently experimented with a pair of dope...

Re: USB - SP-DIF converter.

I used a Musical Fidelity VDAC2 with VPSU for quite a few years. I now use an Audioquest Dragonfly Red together with a 3.5mm to phono converter. Both work well. I believe the MF V90 dac is good too.

Ludovico Einaudi: In a Time Lapse. One of my favourite 'crossover' composers and an overall excellent album.

Re: Doc Mods

Thought I'd keep the thread alive as another happy Doc Modder. I went the whole hog with a pair of 80s standmounters, partly forced by the fact that one tweeter was playing up and the surround disintegrated on a bass driver. I did it all in one go due to the driver issues. The selected bass driver w...

Re: Flush Mounting Drivers

Cheers Scott. If I go the BB ply route, I can get the panels cut and routed fairly locally, but at a price. If I go the MDF way, then B&Q is much cheaper, but then finishing is more of a pain. The tweeter in question is a SEAS TFFC on what will be a 240mm (no round over) or 250mm wide baffle (us...

Flush Mounting Drivers

I class myself as a novice DIYer when it comes to speaker building. One issue I've been grappling with is the issue of diffraction (a) from cabinet edges and (b) lack of driver rebating. With respect to the former, the jury still seems to be out regarding whether cabinet 'round overs' are worth both...

Re: Streaming advice needed.

Late to the party (only just joined), but the cheaper Audioquest Dragonfly (the Black model) is pretty well unbeatable for the money. I have the Red version fed by a 13 year old laptop. Previously I used the Musical Fidelity VDac 2 with a custom home made USB cable. The Audioquest simplifies things ...

Re: New Member

Indeed, the very same. Mine had Mullards in the preamp stage. I now have Psvanes there and Winged Cs in the power section. Very well balanced overall and works well in triode mode even with my relatively inefficient doc modded speakers.

Re: This phase thing

Back on topic, I found this http://greenmountainaudio.com/speaker-time-phase-coherence/ rather interesting. It does somewhat tend to support 1st order crossovers (or if you are fortunate with your drivers, to be able to run the bass/mid 'full range' with just a cap and resistor or l-pad on the tweet...

Hi All. New member here. I've had an interest in audio and hifi since my father bought a not terribly good 'music centre' back in the early 70s. The acquisition of some hifi magazines from the 1971ish era sparked a desire to explore the hobby further. I've never had much money to be able to devote t...
