Re: Zappa documentary

Hi Pink, The clip you might be referring to sounds like Rubber Shirt (a bit), from Sheik Yerbouti or some variation of the Black Page which is on many FZ recordings. Anyway, the film footage is FZ conducting Vinnie & Arthur Barrow during a rehearsal before concert. My guess is that exact recordi...

Re: Vinyl playback and synergy...

Ok boys, if SUT’s don’t grab you in the lows what about mid range/high frequency range. Reason I’m interested in this is due to having the availability of Tx’s for MC in my Ear 324 and used that option for a Denon 103. The MM Shure’s I have been using for the past couple of years seem to have it all...

Re: Vinyl playback and synergy...

Mark, (ILPS) - I’m out of touch about the SUT. What’s causing the problem with MC & step up trannies low end grunt that you have noticed. Regards, Mr. Natural

Re: Vinyl playback and synergy...

Blimey James glad you’re still hard at it & confused (totally normal). I’ve had a few miles on the clock trying to figure out a replay sound that to me is music. It comes and it goes and to find a benchmark where I can say ‘hey, this is it’ is normally impossible for me to achieve. Something hap...

Re: AT450E/OCC - opinions?

James, Hope you find the V15, I’ve been hooked on their magic for a few years. We’ve talked previously about your Ortofon mission where I think you are now cooking up some good results. The vintage V15 is now in a different time period where some folk are happy with modern Jico stylus replacements, ...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Would be interesting to run a original good condition SL-20 against your refurbished version, did you ever hear a original? The Shure’s are now hitting 40 year vintages with the V15, all of the original stylus types I’ve picked up have shown their own idiosyncratic behaviour. There is this unpredict...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Hi James, Been waiting for the round up of this post. Good to hear you are now getting some music from the SL-20. I have been working on one of my VN35e over the same period, it’s a strange bugger but does have the usual Shure voice - you can get some good resolution & fast dynamics if you play ...

Re: Zenith Errors

Would be interesting to know after azimuth testing with a meter if many cartridges are not level in line with a small head shell spirit level. There again I think I read in one of Mark’s links that a lot of small spirit levels were not accurate and were binned after many tests were carried out. I do...

Re: Zenith Errors

Thanks for the links Mark. There’s also more links that feed off of those dealing with this by the Wallytools/Fremer camp. I do check stylus quality with a good microscope (not USB type), so can only see general cantilever mount condition. Lots of analysis and work to do on this via listening tests....

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Hello James, Too good to be true - That’s what I thought, but the comments on other vinyl playback asylums with the previous ‘tie wire’ version hinted that this Will be a bargain. Now, that was only a few months ago, and they started to sell out swiftly on ebay etc. Between then and now they change ...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Hi James and all, The Set Up The Kyowa stylus arrived today but it’s going back. It doesn’t have the tie wire like shown on the sellers ebay auction, a new suspension has replaced the previous design. The tracking force on this new version is a wide range from 3/4g - 2.5g, I needed 2.4g to get it th...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Hi Mark, well I bought em with her birthday money.

She also previously funded a 2nd turntable the Thorens TD160 super with a SME 3009.

She’s lucky she’s got me.

Ciao, Mr.Natural

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

I Did have a Ortofon VMS 20 (not your MC20) that worked very well at the same time span whilst experimenting with the V15 for the first time. Just thought the rhythm of the Shure came across a bit more dynamic, the VMS 20 I thought was a smooth beast certainly not boring but elegant for sure on clas...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Cheers James, So what stylus type is on your V15 - VN35E / HE or MR ? I like the E’s a lot, gawd knows what the hyper elliptical and micro ridge’s do. Yes I know about the many variations that Jico do, but like I mentioned the budget Thakker one is supposed to be done by Jico and is hopeless. Lookin...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Hi James, I’m interested to know how you also get on with the Shure V15 mk.III - stylus wise what is on there at the moment? I have been using the same V15 for about a year and got two original Shure VN35e with it in vgood used condition. Alas, one recently broke when moving tonearm around. Then I t...
