Re: Idle musings

Interesting Ant. And that is without extending the response into the lowest octaves... My experience with baffle less use of woofers is that they really don't develop a realistic body and weight unless you are doing something like Vic's deployment where each of the drivers dynamically load the other...

Jeffs spreadsheet looks really interesting - I haven't looked at it before but I will now - thanks for posting the link.

Re: What would you do with these drivers?

When I'm quickly knocking out designs for comparison/evolution purposes I use two different sources... First port of call https://www.ajdesigner.com/speaker/ either online or the downloaded versions Second opinion http://www.mh-audio.nl/Loudspeakers.html#top and for the three main reflex alignments ...

Re: What would you do with these drivers?

Nice design! Good tweak of Qts. I really like the group delay plot too and being a sealed box the excursion is nicely under control too..

It s good to have lots of power available to trade efficiency against low end performance :D

Re: Idle musings

Hi Ed, Many thanks for that - I am at least 10-15 years behind with the state of the art and 45 years since I first started using a drum machine... In my youth I (played at trains) joined a music synthesiser group at Uni - we had to design and build all our kit - great fun - 25 smelly geeks in a sma...

Re: Idle musings

Hi Greg, Here is wiki statement on drum machines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_machine I was referring to the machine generated patterns that maintain a constant beat - a human drummer speeds up and slows down their beat pattern whilst paying within the time signature to accentuate the feel of ...

Re: Idle musings

Agree with that point too - I listen at a lower level when I use the sub-woofer too... and it seems to make micro dynamics better as well as macro dynamics and it improves rhythmic contrasts - for instance it makes the difference between drum machine drums and human played drums more obvious with th...

Re: Idle musings

Its one hell of a box to get that driver down low... For a reflex box SC4 alignment. 670l!!!!! F3 24Hz small peak about 0.3dB. F12 20Hz so it fall off a cliff! 20cm port dia - realistically two 14 cm diameter ports 4 cm length About 93dB/W efficency so they will need a bit of power to match the tc. ...

Re: What would you do with these drivers?

That Grimm Audio paper is interesting and I would love to hear the end result. I've only heard the Philips motional feedback loudspeakers and I didn't like them much although they were impressive... The earlier Seas design was more to my taste in terms of design... Although now I've had a look at th...

Re: What would you do with these drivers?

Damn!!! Sorry misread the line - got the figure from the line above that has Sd at 363.... OK I'll redo it with VAS correct... I'll do it over lunch as busy with work now.... An SBB4 or SC4 looks like 40l ish for around 30Hz F3 and smooth response i.e. no peaking and around 20Hz F12.... wow pretty a...

Re: What would you do with these drivers?

Mark said: Qtc 0.36 ? I had a feeling you'd suggest a big box ! :D With a VAS of 363l it would be difficult not to do a big box! Thats my excuse anyway... A boom box config (the popular QB3 alignment) would get a small box but to my ears sounds poor... its the typical reflex 'one note' bass alignmen...

Re: What would you do with these drivers?

OK a big box but happy to sit close to one wall.... Reflex box but SC4 alignment (Forth-Order Sub-Chebyshev) so not a boom box alignment - good transients F3 28Hz no peaking so flat to the F3. F12 19Hz. Qts 0.36 so a little overdamped that helps in a domestic room. port 12cm and 16cm deep. Volume 21...

Re: Classic Cartridges

Should have listened to Ken Kessler Wow!!! :D Grados have always been a bit of a "Marmite" choice - I never could make my mind up about them some I liked and some I really didn't.... of course that could have been me or just normal system dependence... Glad you have something your enjoying and that...

Re: New Cartridge for XMAS

Hi Ed, Many thanks for the report - it seemed the Kyowa was too good to be true at that price and so it proved... A real shame they changed how its made... As you say 2.4gm is too high a tracking force for the V15 III design so its rake angle would be out and the suspension too compressed on top to ...
