Re: Nothing In Particular

Oh dear. Popped a fuse in the 15W OTL output stage last night. Cause: not a faulty tube. One too many Tequilas and an AC/DC record turned up a little bit too loud. Maplins no longer exists so got to go all the way to RS in Nottingham this afternoon for some more fuses, so we can use the amp tonight.

Re: Nothing In Particular

Walked into the living room this morning and saw, behind the mantle clock on the window sill between the Metronomes, a plump, speckled brown bird. Well, at first it was just my eyes that saw it, it took a while for my brain to catch up with the reality of "there's a bird in the living room". My firs...

Re: Broskie phono stage circuit - a few questions

Problem solved. The PC version of the Kindle reader will expand images to fill the screen if you expand the reading window - complete with better resolution. For some reason, the Mac version won't. :? So we've got around the problem by having Meredith bring up the image on her PC, screen shot it, th...

Re: Broskie phono stage circuit - a few questions

Ugh - why did I buy the Kindle version of the latest Morgan Jones? WHY? Figure 7.49 which shows the circuit diagram with component values - kinda critical if you want to try building it - is too low-resolution for the component values to be legible. Thank you Amazon (or whoever was responsible for t...

Re: Broskie phono stage circuit - a few questions

Also found, on this very site, a similar thread from Paul Barker a couple of years ago exploring balanced phono stages - as well as the Wright, it seems that the latest Morgan Jones (which I have on Kindle) has a balanced hybrid RIAA circuit too which looks quite similar. The advantage of the latter...

Re: Broskie phono stage circuit - a few questions

Thanks everyone - esp. Nick for giving me some figures to start off with. Appreciate the input. I posted in Beginners because I realised I knew very little about FETs - valves I have a far better handle on. I know I'm being a smidge ambitious - phono preamps are awkward buggers to get right at the b...

Broskie phono stage circuit - a few questions

The recent phono stage shootout got me thinking about them again and I've been looking at various circuits. This one caught my eye as seeming to be remarkably simple and elegant, it's one that Broskie posted on TubeCAD in 2015 and it looks like it's flown under the radar a bit - not sure if anyone h...

Re: Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club

Taken me a while to marshall my thoughts - not sure how much of value I have to contribute but I'll do my best :) For me, in the end there were just too many phono stages in the shootout to really get a meaningful impression of what I liked best - I got to the point of thinking 'you know, they all s...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

I've just read back through the thread and realised I've not really posted my impressions of the different amplifiers properly. Sorry about that, I've not had a great week this week - long story! The DIY NVA was playing when I arrived so I did get to hear a few tracks with it, but not as many as Chr...

Re: Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club

Cool! I'll show up with my OTL too and the AMB linestage then, if that's okay? The AMB is my first scratch-build so would be interested to see what people think of it.

Re: Yorkshire Hi-Fi Club

Will there be any relatively efficient / easy to drive speakers? Could bring my 15W OTL, would be interesting to see how much of a gap there is between it and mega-priced bohemoths. Also my AMB stepped-relay active linestage - good for balanced / unbalanced I/O. Though I realise neither of these are...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Note the green label on the plug, denoting that the lead has been subjected to a proprietary cable burn in process that exactly aligns the magnetic flux with the ley line that passes through the nearby village of Denaby Main. http://i.imgur.com/RQTyHZZ.jpg Note also the top-of-the-range proprietary...

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Also gotta say, the pink 2A3 amp. Despite the fact it was a little down on power it still sang like a canary, I could have listened to it for hours. I never heard a 2A3 amplifier I didn't like. Still have fond memories of my WAD 2A3 PSE from years ago.

Re: Fane 12-250TC Retro Speaker.

Now I hate it when Dave brings this wonderous device to our house. I always end up a broken man when he takes it away, and today was no exception. It was simply magic. There is not a lot more that can be said. Thing is, Steve, you keep building speakers that work beautifully with OTL's which can be...
